CMM was the initial model laid down by Software Engineering Institute, Carnegie Mellon University, which underwent several revisions based on the feedback received from the industry. CMM based on these revisions has transformed into an upgraded model called CMMI – Dev (Ver 1.2), where CMMI stands for Capability Maturity Model Integration.
CMMI Maturity level 3 requires an organization to have a defined set of standard processes and its institutionalization throughout the Organization. Every level of CMMI has got some Process Areas which need to be institutionalized to achieve that Maturity level. To achieve any Maturity level process areas falling under that level as well as the process areas that fall under the level(s) below need to be fulfilled. There are 18 Process areas (7 – Level 2, 11 – Level 3) which must be fulfilled by an organization in order to achieve level 3. All 18 Process Areas falls under different categories as Process Management, Project Management, Engineering and Support process Areas.
The process management processes contain the cross-project activities related to defining , planning, deploying, implementing, monitoring, controlling, appraising, measuring and improving processes. The processes that come under this category are:
The processes under this category cover the project management activities related to planning, monitoring and controlling the project. These address the activities related to establishing and maintaining the project plan, establishing and maintaining commitments, monitoring progress against plan, taking corrective action and managing supplier agreement. Theprocesses that come under this category are:
Engineering processes cover the development and maintenance activities that are shared across engineering disciplines. The engineering processes apply to the development of any product or service in the development domain (e.g., software products, hardware products, services or processes). The engineering processes integrate the process associated with different engineering disciplines into a single product development process, supporting a product oriented process improvement strategy. The processes that come under this category are:
As the name suggests these processes act as support in development and maintenance. Support processes address those processes / activities that are targeted toward the project and may address processes that apply more generally to the organization. The processes that come under this category are:
